30 July – 8 August 2021
Thinking of visiting Lisbon during Summer? Music-lovers especially will find their fancy in this bustling cultural capital. Of course, the old-school Alfama district cannot be missed to catch some of the best fado Portugal has to offer. Another music must is a bold music festival named Jazz em Agosto.
Held yearly at the Gulbenkian theatre since 1984, Jazz em Agosto has become one of the brightest stars in the international jazz scene, showcasing the most creative and innovative examples of jazz and improvised music. Instead of just looking back at the past and the richness of a musical genre that changed the history of music in the 20th century, the festival has become a reference seeking new directions and voices. Amongst many others, the seminal Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman and the Art Ensemble of Chicago have all taken to the stage here, along with names such as John Zorn, Mats Gustafsson and Peter Evans.
Held over ten days in July and August, Jazz em Agosto includes numerous concerts, conferences and film screenings – some of which are in the Gulbenkian’s gorgeous open-air amphitheatre. If you’re looking for a mind-opening, exhilarating and enlightening music experience, this is the event for you.
